Max Sauze

Max Sauze (1933–?) was a French industrial designer renowned for his sculptural aluminum lighting designs. Born in Algiers, he studied at the Beaux-Arts in Algiers and later at École Camondo in Paris before settling in Éguilles, near Aix-en-Provence, in 1963. In the 1970s, he developed a distinctive style based on curved and braided aluminum strips over steel wire structures, creating pendant lamps and fixtures with geometric, airy, and organic forms. His iconic models, including the Cassiopée, Orion, Andromède pendants, and the Uranus lamp, showcase his experimentation with materials, emphasis on lightness, and poetic approach to illumination. Inspired by constellations and astronomy, Sauze created a universe where lighting becomes sculpture and light itself shapes the space, leaving a lasting influence on 20th-century French lighting design.
