Yonel Lebovici

1937 — 1998

French designer and sculptor Yonel Lebovici occupies a distinctive position at the crossroads of design, art, and functional sculpture. Born in Paris in 1937, he initially trained in aeronautical engineering before studying drawing and applied arts in Paris.

From the 1960s onward, he developed a highly personal approach, transforming everyday objects and exploring questions of scale, function, and perception. In 1969, he opened his own studio in Paris, creating sculptural furniture and lighting, including the iconic Satellite and Soucoupe lamps, some of which were edited by Pierre Cardin.

Working with modern materials such as plexiglass, aluminum, and steel, Lebovici described his creations as “functional sculptures.” His bold and experimental work, exhibited in galleries, fairs, and institutions including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris
