Gilbert Valentin
1928 — 2001
Gilbert Valentin (1928–2001) was a French ceramist, painter, and sculptor closely associated with Vallauris, where he settled in the early 1950s. There, he founded the Les Archanges workshop, under which he developed a distinctive and highly recognizable body of work, emblematic of the postwar revival of French ceramics.
Under the signature Gilbert Valentin – Les Archanges – Vallauris, he created vases, pitchers, bowls, lamps, and sculptures with free-form shapes, often enlivened by abstract decoration, vivid colors, and a remarkable sense of plastic freedom. His work stands out for its highly expressive approach to material, combining formal inventiveness, sculptural volume, and a modernist spirit.
