Mado Jolain

1921 — 2019

Mado Jolain (1921–2019) was a major French ceramicist of the post-war period, whose work stands at the intersection of functional design and formal research. Active from the late 1940s, she developed a refined vocabulary through everyday objects—pitchers, vases, bowls, and tableware—where the purity of line highlights the quality of clay and glaze.

Her work gradually evolved toward more architectural forms, often structured by incised lines or perforations, giving her pieces a restrained yet sculptural presence. She also paid particular attention to objects linked to domestic rituals, such as soap dishes and bathroom accessories, which she approached with the same formal rigor, elevating these utilitarian items into true design objects.

Distributed notably by Primavera and La Demeure, Jolain played a key role in the renewal of French ceramics in the 1950s. Her work is now highly sought after for its subtle balance between function, modernity, and sculptural sensitivity.
