Stilnovo

1946 —

Stilnovo

Founded in Milan in 1946 by Bruno Gatta, Stilnovo quickly became one of the most iconic lighting design houses in post-war Italy. In a country rebuilding from conflict, Gatta envisioned a forward-thinking company that would blend innovation, modern aesthetics, and industrial precision. From the start, Stilnovo stood out for its cutting-edge approach, producing lighting that was both functional and beautifully designed.

Between the 1950s and 1970s, Stilnovo established itself as a creative hub for some of the most celebrated architects and designers of the time. Under Gatta’s leadership, the company collaborated with talents such as Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Joe Colombo, Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, and Angelo Gaiani. Together, they redefined lighting design with pieces that were bold, modern, and technically innovative.

Stilnovo’s creations are instantly recognizable for their geometric lines, experimental use of industrial materials (lacquered metal, brass, opaline glass), and a desire to make high-quality design accessible. Standout pieces include the 1950s “Sputnik” chandelier with its dynamic multi-arm structure, and the 1960s “Alberello” floor lamp, with its opaline globes and elegant Carrara marble base.

Stilnovo’s legacy is one of brilliant design, where form meets function with artistic flair. After a period of dormancy, the brand experienced a revival when it joined the Linea Light Group in 2019. This transition has allowed for the faithful reissue of its most iconic models, while opening the door to new collaborations with contemporary designers.

Today, Stilnovo remains a shining symbol of Italian design excellence — a perfect balance between heritage and innovation, tradition and creativity, light and emotion.
