Erwine et Estelle Laverne

Erwine Laverne (1916–2003) and Estelle Laverne (1918–2003) were a leading American design duo of the postwar period. Trained as an architect, Erwine worked in close partnership with Estelle, a designer, to develop experimental furniture from the early 1950s onward.

Founders of Laverne International, they pioneered the use of molded plywood, fiberglass, and later expanded foams, creating organic, sculptural forms that anticipated the design language of the 1960s and 1970s. Their work, situated between design, architecture, and sculpture, was exhibited in major institutions, including the MoMA.
