Gaetano Sciolari
Gaetano Sciolari (1927–1994)
Gaetano Sciolari was an Italian designer specializing in lighting. Born in 1927 in Italy, he grew up in a family already active in the lighting industry. After studying architecture, he took over the family business, Sciolari Lighting, in the 1950s following his father's death.
Sciolari began designing lighting fixtures for the Italian brand Stilnovo in the 1950s. He quickly gained recognition for his style, which was both modern and sophisticated, combining simple geometric shapes with luxurious materials such as brass, chrome, and glass. Stilnovo was one of the leading Italian lighting companies, with a reputation that extended far beyond Italy’s borders, thanks to its innovative and technically advanced designs.
In the 1960s and 1970s, he collaborated with the American company Lightolier, which helped him gain international recognition. His creations were distinguished by a highly recognizable aesthetic, blending straight, strict lines with occasional organic shapes. He liked to use sliding systems and counterweights, which allowed him to bring a sense of modernity to his lighting fixtures, meeting the needs of his contemporaries.
It can be said that Gaetano Sciolari was inspired by the Art Deco period and its Modernist offshoot, reflected in his radical design approach.
Today, his lighting fixtures are highly sought after by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts. Sciolari left a lasting mark on the design world with his unique style, a blend of luxury and simplicity.
