History:

The Soleil model armchairs designed by Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol rank among the most emblematic creations of French design in the 1950s. First presented at the 1958 Brussels World Expo, where they were awarded the Gold Medal, these seats immediately stood out for their radically new silhouette and their renewed approach to rattan furniture.

Produced notably by Rougier, the chair is distinguished by a suspended woven rattan core seat set within a circular structure of curved rods. This composition, both light and architectural, evokes a solar form — somewhere between a torus and a diabolo — giving the chair a sculptural presence while maintaining a remarkable sensation of suspension. This formal exploration reflects the duo’s intention to reinvent the use of traditional materials through a bold modernist vocabulary.

The model’s success was swiftly confirmed: in 1959, the Soleil armchairs were presented at the Salon des Arts Ménagers on the Abraham & Rol stand, where they contributed to the emergence of a new domestic aesthetic combining craftsmanship, technical innovation, and formal freedom. This visibility belongs to the broader context of a generation of designers — often referred to as the “young wolves” of French design — who helped redefine the identity of postwar furniture.

Beyond institutional recognition, the Soleil armchairs demonstrate their influence through their inclusion in prestigious interiors. The decorator Jean Royère, a major figure on the international design scene of the 1950s, selected them for a project commissioned for the Shah of Iran’s palace in Tehran, integrating these seats into a composition where Western modernity and decorative refinement interact with subtlety.

Today, the Soleil model remains an iconic piece, representing a remarkable synthesis of sculpture and furniture. Through their visual lightness, structural inventiveness, and graphic strength, these armchairs fully embody the experimental spirit of the 1950s and illustrate Abraham & Rol’s decisive contribution to the history of rattan design
