Michel Ducaroy (1925–2009) was born in Lyon into a family that had been connected to the furniture industry for several generations. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown, he chose early on to dedicate himself to design. From the 1950s onwards, he developed a pioneering approach, embracing new materials such as foams and thermoformed plastics.
In 1954, he began a long-standing collaboration with Roset, later Ligne Roset, where for several decades he played a key role in modernizing French furniture. His research into comfort, supple forms, and modularity led to the creation of emblematic models, foremost among them the Togo (1973), which became an icon of 20th-century design and remains a worldwide success to this day.
From the early 1960s, Ducaroy pursued constant experimentation. He conceived low seating, enveloping structures, and modular compositions. As part of a new avant-garde generation of designers, he helped to redefine the French art of living, creating evolutionary pieces that transformed interiors. The Société des Artistes Décorateurs, under the dome of the Grand Palais, offered an exceptional showcase for these modern ambitions, and Ducaroy participated in its exhibitions several times, establishing himself as one of the most important designers of his era. Some of his creations, despite their relevance, were never produced, remaining as rare testimonies of his inventive spirit, always in search of new technical and aesthetic solutions.
On the occasion of Design Miami/Paris 2025, Galerie Meubles et Lumières will unveil a previously unseen selection from Michel Ducaroy’s personal collection. Most of these works, never produced and never before exhibited, reveal a crucial aspect of his practice: experimentation and formal research. They highlight the hand of a designer who, beyond his most iconic models, profoundly contributed to redefining contemporary ways of living.
