History:
The lighting pieces by Léopold Gest perfectly characterize this personal body of work that began to take shape in the late 1960s. At that time, he started creating his first metal objects using fragments gathered from the rural world: pieces of plows, horse bits, spades, and abandoned farming tools. These elements, cut, recomposed, and abraded according to his intuition, became lamps, candlesticks, or floor lamps. Sometimes evoking animals, sometimes imaginary machines, these assemblages are close to the spirit of the ready-made, situated between art and design, and mark the beginning of a practice in which steel became his material of choice.
