Canopy Bed by Maria Pergay (1971)
In 1971, in Persepolis, Iran, grand festivities were organized to mark the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great. Maison Jansen, a prestigious Parisian interior design house, was entrusted with creating a "city of tents." This truly magical environment harmoniously combined modern furniture with reproductions of ancient pieces.
For this occasion, and specifically for the bedroom of Farah Pahlavi, the Empress of Iran, Maria Pergay designed a large chromed metal bed (230x215x160 cm).
Placed in an opulent setting with walls covered in white silk damask, the bed, with its chromed canopy adorned with fine X-shaped crossbars, was draped in handmade linen. It stood proudly at the center of the Empress's bedroom, surrounded by a Louis XIV desk, a mirror, and transparent plexiglass coffee tables designed by Atelier A. This magnificent project was greatly appreciated by world dignitaries and marked a turning point in Maria Pergay's career, cementing her reputation as a luxurious yet bold designer. Through her affiliation with Maison Jansen and her talent for blending modernity with tradition, she became a leading figure in the world of "high-end design."
Subsequently, a very limited number of these beds were made, available by special order only. The one we offer was commissioned from Maria Pergay in 1973 by a private collector in the south of France.
